Teaser Tuesday (10): Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.
Grab the book you are currently reading and randomly post a couple sentences.

And then my mother does something that, even after all of the paperwork and plane tickets and presentations, I don't see coming. Something that would've happened in a year anyway, once I left for college, but that no matter how many days or months or years I've yearned for it, I am still not prepared for when it actually happens.

My mother leaves. I am alone. (pg. 8)

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Pages: 370
Release date: 4th January 2011 (Penguin Australia)
Genre: YA, contemporary
Ages: 14+

Blurb (Goodreads):

Anna Oliphant is separated from her friends and her crush to spend a year in a boarding school in Paris. After an achingly realistic awkward start, she falls in with the arty group at her boarding school, which includes handsome, kind and funny Etienne. Over the course of the school year, she slowly, deeply, not always smoothly, falls in love with the city...and with Etienne...all the while enduring the barbs of some of the other boarders, who love to call Anna 'skunk girl' because of the white streak she dyes in her hair. Adding to Anna's troubles, Etienne already has a girlfriend, and even if he didn't, Anna's good friend at the school, Meredith, also has her eyes on him, and she has prior claims.

But Anna grows closer than ever to Etienne, and the tension between them is palpable as they resist the urge to kiss one another in a very French way.

Hope you enjoy this week's Teaser Tuesday!

[Review] The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

Title: The Chosen One
Author: Carol Lynch Williams
Publication: December 2010 (AU)
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Australia
Source: PB, For Review (Thanks S&S!)
Pages: 210
Series: Standalone
My Rating:

Blurb:
In a polygamous cult in the desert, Kyra, not yet fourteen, sees being chosen to be the seventh wife of her uncle as just punishment for having read books and kissed a boy, in violation of Prophet Childs' teachings, and is torn between facing her fate and running away from all that she knows and loves.
My thoughts:

This book was nothing like I was expecting. The Chosen One was an intense, evocative read that brought an inside perspective on an intensely religious community, called The Chosen Ones. Children are physically abused to obedience. Girls are married off to men decades older in early teens, and men have several wives. This is the will of God, so they say.

It's difficult for me when reading books that address religion, since I'm not religious in any right, and thereby find it hard to think the whole practice wrong and immoral. However, I do regard that there is some merit to taking that leap of faith and blindly following something of a cult, to believe that there is some higher entity out there watching every move, and it is through those actions performed on Earth that it is decided whether one is brought up to heaven or to hell.

It took me over a week to read this one, despite its extremely small size. I think the main reason is that it made me so angry, that there could be such a community. The characters are unlikeable, except for Patrick, because he owns a book mobile and is a sweetie. I liked some of Kyra, the protragonist's, siblings, but there were just so many, to make a point of the polygamist society, that it was hard to keep track of many of the names that kept popping up, that it became a blur by the end.

The writing was sub-par. Pretty ordinary, but it does assume the voice of Kyra, 13 years old. I don't know. It was just okay.

The ending left me with hope, and while not the best, I did like how much the last 50 pages evoked so much emotion of me. I think that is the reason I am throwing this book a 4/5.

YA Historical Fiction Challenge

Historical fiction: tells a story that is set in the past. That setting is usually real and drawn from history, and often contains actual historical persons, but the principal characters tend to be fictional. Writers of stories in this genre, while penning fiction, attempt to capture the spirit, manners, and social conditions of the persons or time(s) presented in the story, with due attention paid to period detail and fidelity. (Wikipedia)

There are three levels for this challenge:

Level 1: 5 YA HF books in 2011
Level 2: 10 YA HF books in 2011
Level 3: 15 YA HF books in 2011

For now, I'll stick with 5 YA HF books--if and when I reach that, I'll level up. ;)

Here's my list:

  1. Deadly - Julie Chibbaro
  2. In the Shadow of the Lamp - Susanne Dunlap
  3. Between Shades of Grey - Ruta Sepetys
  4. The Lost Crown: A Novel of Romanov Russia - Sarah Miller
  5. A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle, #1) - Libba Bray
  6. The Season - Sarah MacLean
  7. Beautiful Days (Bright Young Things, #2) - Anna Godbersen

Weekend Question (8): Reading books

Weekend Question is hosted at Liz at Cleverly Inked. Every weekend, a bookish question will be asked.

This week I made up a question. Liz is undergoing personal things right now, so I'll be making up my own questions to answer. :)

Weekend Question:

How many books do you read at a time, on average?

I used to only read one book a time, but lately I've been tackling two at a time. However, I much prefer to read books exclusively, so as to focus all my attention to that one story and its characters. I think it stems from my growing anxiety that I've been unable to just keep to one book.

What about you?

Yo! Are you interested in joining in the weekly meme, too?

[Review] The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller

Title: The Eternal Ones
Author: Kirsten Miller
Publication: 30th August 2010 (UK)
Publisher: Penguin UK
Source: PB, For Review (Thanks Penguin Australia!)
Pages: 420
Series: Yes (The Sequel?)
My Rating:

Blurb:
Haven Moore has always known she's different: there are the talents that can't be explained; the knowledge of places she's never been; and then there are the visions that overwhelm her - terrifying visions of a life that ended tragically two decades earlier and more than a thousand miles away in New York City. The citizens of Haven's rural, highly religious community, believe that she's been possessed by a demon. But this is no demon: it's reincarnation.

Haven journeys all the way to Manhattan in search of clues about her past life and a decades-old murder. One wrong move could lead her into the clutches of the sinister villain at the center of a conspiracy much larger than she could have ever imagined. But if she makes the right choices, Haven will find the answers she's been seeking her entire life.

This is an epic and thrilling romance set in the snake-handling churches of Appalachia, the dusty ruins of ancient Rome, and the grand mansions of Manhattan. The Eternal Ones tells the story of the first battle in a war between undying love and eternal evil.
My thoughts:

Mysterious and insanely romantic, The Eternal Ones definitely struck a chord within me. I grew to love Haven and Beau, was constantly fascinated with the reincarnation idea, and how Kirsten Miller interwove this story that kept me in the dark and begging for the pieces to finally fall into place.

Characters: The protagonist, Haven, is a curly red-head who keeps on fainting. Her best friend, Beau, is openly gay. Both were segregated from their society for being different than the rest of them: Haven wants more than anything to fly freely, while Beau is more afraid to leave everything that he's known. I loved them both. Haven's grandma, Imogene, was thought up of to be hated to the most intense of degrees. The minister, also wanted to be disliked. Then there is Iain, the man who is the reincarnated soul of Ethan Evans, Haven's - Constance's eternal lover. I was switched to-and-fro on my opinion of him, and while I thought all along I had it all figured out, it ended so, so differently. There is also a "secret society" lurking underneath New York, marked by the snake eating itself, which was pretty cool.

Story: Engaging. A great mystery. Some of it was a bit wishy-washy, but it only served to make me want to keep on reading.

Writing: Descriptive in simplicity. Good dialogue all-around. A thriller mystery that got me thinking, then second-guessing myself. There were so many twists and turns that it made me a bit dizzy at times, and that's why it took so long to finish. The chapters are really short, only about 2-9 pages each. Needed a bit more polishing, as the writing was uncertain in places. However, that's the true beauty of the novel--it seemed to echo the rickety feelings of Haven as she continues to investigate her true purpose.

Ending: Shocking, heartbreaking and carried with it so much emotion. Gosh, the ending was great. The book ends pretty conclusively, but I still hope that there IS a sequel.

Cover: A bit simple. Definitely not as bold as other YA covers out there, but the use of the red, just as the base, is what makes it stick out on my bookshelf.

Conclusion: If you love mysteries, you'd better give this one a spin (was that a pun?).

(There are far better reviews out there, from people who also loved the book, so I'll be linking them below. :P Maybe they can be more accurate and coherent; I'm just not up to the task.)

Waiting on Wednesday (16): Ripple

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: Ripple
{goodreads}
Author: Mandy Hubbard
Release Date: July 21st 2011
Why? I really liked You Wish, Mandy's second novel. I have yet to read her debut, Prada and Prejudice, but I have a copy in possession. :) The cover is amazing. I love novels with mermaids/sirens and the sea in it. Plus, it sounds so dark and mysterious--completely different to her first two books.

Synopsis (Goodreads):

Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. The water calls to her, draws her in, forces her to sing her deadly song to unsuspecting victims. If she succumbs, she kills. If she doesn’t, the pain is unbearable. To keep herself and those she cares about safe, she shuts herself off, refusing to make friends or fall in love—again. Because the last time she fell in love with a boy, he ended up dead.

Then Lexi meets Cole. Against her better judgment, she finds herself opening up again, falling in love when she knows she shouldn’t. But when she’s offered the chance to finally live a normal life, she learns that the price she must pay to be free of her curse is giving him up.

In Ripple, Mandy Hubbard spins a sea-ravaged tale of melancholy beauty, and the choices one girl makes between land and waves, love and freedom, her future—and her heart.

Teaser Tuesday (9): The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.
Grab the book you are currently reading and randomly post a couple sentences.

I probably will not be receiving that many new books for a while, just because I haven't been buying or winning anything lately. But that's fine--I need to get a move on with all these books that have been piling up over the past few months.

HOW CAN I eat with him?
     I hate him. Hate him.
     How can I marry him?
I am sick to the very center.
I must think of a way out of this.

[Elevensies Love #2] Kirsten Hubbard, author of Like Mandarin

I, like many of you, love debut authors and so to hit off the new year a bit early, I'm doing a weekly feature here. These features will introduce you to new YA authors for 2011: blurbs, links and giveaways--no giveaways from me, but I'll scour the 'net and see if there are any going on at the moment. If I were organised I'd have come up with some interview questions for the authors, but I'm not that smart. :P

Kirsten Hubbard is...
A 27-year-old travel writer and young adult author, Kirsten Hubbard has hiked ancient ruins in Cambodia, dived with wild dolphins in Belize (one totally looked her in the eye), slept in a Slovenian jail cell, and navigated the Wyoming badlands (without a compass) in search of transcendent backdrops for her novels. She lives in San Diego, California.
Come on, this girl's got some life! Hiking in ancient ruins? Sleeping in wild and unknown lands? She's definitely got stories to tell!

Like Mandarin

Author: Kirsten Hubbard
Release Date: March 8th 2011
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Genre: Contemporary
Part of the Contemps Challenge!!
"I want to be beautiful like you, I thought, as if Mandarin were listening.

I want apricot skin and Pocahontas hair and eyes the color of tea. I want to be confident and detached and effortlessly sensual, and if promiscuity is part of the package, I will gladly follow your lead. All I know is I'm so tired of being inside my body.

I would give anything to be like Mandarin."

~

It's hard finding beauty in the badlands of Washokey, Wyoming, but 14-year-old Grace Carpenter knows it's not her mother's pageant obsessions, or the cowboy dances adored by her small-town classmates. True beauty is wild-girl Mandarin Ramey: 17, shameless and utterly carefree. Grace would give anything to be like Mandarin.

When they're united for a project, they form an unlikely, explosive friendship, packed with nights spent skinny-dipping in the canal, liberating the town's animal-head trophies, and searching for someplace magic. Grace plays along when Mandarin suggests they run away together. Blame it on the crazy-making wildwinds plaguing their badlands town.

Because all too soon, Grace discovers Mandarin's unique beauty hides a girl who's troubled, broken, and even dangerous. And no matter how hard Grace fights to keep the magic, no friendship can withstand betrayal.
I've always been mysteriously drawn to this title. I like the concept of the novel, and love contemporary so, so much, because these kinds of things could actually happen! I like the cover. It's nothing too extravagant, and I think that's the main thing about the cover: it suits the book.

Early Reviews:
  • "Hubbard's writing is magical. I was so caught up in the story." (full review)
    --Ashelynn of A Gypsy Writer:
  • "A beautifully crafted, bittersweet story about an unlikely friendship that sets two very different people free."
    --Melina Marchetta

That's it for this week's Elevensies Love featurette!

My Elevensies Love contest has ended, and winners have been announced. Maybe in the future I'll be able to host more contests--I've emailed a small number of 2011 authors, and I will be giving away swag in the future. ;)

Previously on Elevensies Love:
Sara Bennett Wealer, Rival (Feb 2011)
Kirsten Hubbard, Like Mandarin (March 2011)

Winners :)

There were 160 entrants. The winners of the Elevensies Love giveaway are:

1. #3: Nic at Irresistable Reads, who lives in Australia! You get to choose between a 2K11 YA debut novel or a 2K10 debut from October-December.

2. #120: Claire at YA Bookie Monster, who lives in Canada. You get to choose afterwards, so I'll email you after Nic has emailed me with confirmation.

I've kept $26.50 AU in my bank account, so if your pre-order exceeds $13, I'll ask that you get me the 10% off from The Book Depository, if the price is a few dollars over.

There were 20 entrants. The winners of either Stork or Girl Parts (AU only) are:

1. #9: Holly with Good Golly Miss Holly

2. #7: Lisa with Badass Bookie (who received an extra entry through secret Twitter retweet, but would've won anyway :P)

I didn't really plan ahead and decide how I was going to split the prize, so since Holly was chosen first, she'll get first choice. Um, and also note that I will be extremely slow with postage. It's a combination of lack of cash and inability to sleuth my way out of the house long enough to head to the post office. :P

Congratulations! I will be sending out emails soon enough.

Didn't win? I wish I could give everyone something, but anyway, over the new year I will be hosting some more contests. But hopefully that is not your primary purpose in following my blog.

Please, when entering contests, read everything. A couple of people entered the AU only contest, when they clearly did not live in Australia. These entries were deleted.

Also, in the future, I will ask that you provide some sort of URL, even to a Goodreads account. This may seem a bit unfair, but I'm nosy and I like to check up on winners. ;)

[Review] I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

Title: I Am Number Four
Author: Pittacus Lore (pseudonym)
Publication: 27th August 2010
Publisher: Penguin UK
Source: PB, For Review (Thanks Penguin Australia!)
Pages: 360
Series: Book 1 of the Lorien Legacies
My Rating:

Blurb:
John Smith is not your average teenager.

He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving, those who hunt him will find and kill him.

But you can't run for ever.

So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, Johnd ecides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about - and who care about him. Never in John's short lfie has there been space for friendship, or even love.

But it's a matter of time before John's secret is revealed.

He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed.

John is Number Four. He knows that he is next . . .
My thoughts:

Yes, I Am Number Four was written by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. Many people would be familiar with Frey's marketing scam with his fictional memoir. However, just disregard that episode--Four is actually really good.

If you're like me - new to the sci-fi scene, perhaps a reluctant reader of the genre - you'll be repelled, or apprehensive, by the thought of reading about aliens. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Okay, so while the overall pitch of the novel was fairly straight-forward and predictable - in that the main character is the hero and is the "last chance", and a big battle breaks out between "good" and "evil" - I found myself so immersed within the novel and all that happens.

I Am Number Four tells of an alien from Lorien, who is among the last of nine baby aliens on a mission to save their species and planet from the Mogadorians, who we learn are a land-sucking anti-species to the Loriens. John Smith, 15, is an alien. But he'd much rather be a normal high school kid: make friends, go to school. When he is suddenly akin to his first "Legacy", he is both shocked and amazed. The Lorien race's last hope, is those last remaining.

The characters are both a positive and negative aspect for me. They are far too perfect, especially Sarah, Four's love interest. However, I loved a lot of the characters by the end, so while I couldn't connect with any character on any personal level, I still enjoyed learning more about them and actually grew to care about what happened to them. The big battle got me quite emotional. :P

The writing style, which I just realised I've been completely neglecting lately in my reviews. I'm not sure how I feel about the writing style with this one. It wasn't eloquent or sophisticated, but if it had been it wouldn't have suited the story. So, with that said, the way the book was written sits in the "fine" category with me. I love a well written narrative, but that is never a necessity, especially in the YA genre. In I Am Number Four, everything is simple to imagine in the head.

The one thing I will talk about that I absolutely hated, pinning it down, is the relationship shared between Four and Sarah. It was incredibly cheesy, and after about a week of knowing each other, they're exchanging "I love you"'s and acting like an old married couple - the loving kind, not the bickering kind. It was pretty sickening at times, and I'm glad that the novel ended the way it did, because [possible spoiler!] it pretty much ensures that we won't be seeing Sarah anymore.
Thanks so much I HEART MONSTER for hosting the read-a-long. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have picked up my review copy so early, but I'm so, so glad that I did because this one is was really enjoyable. Even among all the bad reviews that I've seen (but not read through). I can't wait to watch the movie, but I'm also a bit worried that it won't be as good or as detailed as the book was.
