In My Mailbox (20): The late edition

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi of The Story Siren, and inspired by Alea at Pop Culture Junkie!

Wow, I was so busy today that I didn't even check the blog! I'm so sorry. I'm not sure if anyone commented on my earlier IMM post, but if you did, I'm sorry. I was meant to update it, but I've just been busy. You know, with the future. University. :S It's so much bigger than high school! And I'll be going to it next year. It's scary... Anyway, here's this week's mailbox:

For Review:

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard (TV tie-in version)

While I have already read this book, I'll re-read so I can review it. I'm very excited to be able to read it again! Also, I may be giving this copy away. :) You know, once I get my PLL box set (I plan to ask for it for my 18th birthday).

Everyone has something to hide - especially high school juniors Spencer, Aria, Emily and Hanna.

Spencer covets her sister's boyfriend. Aria's fantasizing about her English teacher. Emily has a crush on the new girl at school. And Hanna is using some ugly tricks to stay beautiful.

But they've all kept an even bigger secret since their friend Alison vanished.

How do I know? Because I know everything about the bad girls they were and the naughty girls they are now. And guess what? I'm telling.

Dark Secrets 3: The Back Door of Midnight by Elizabeth Chandler

I have been really wanting to read something of Chandler's, and since I'd have preferred to read the series in sequence, I may not be able to review this one soon. But I will check out my library and see if I can get the first 2 books.
Psychic...or psychotic?

Anna knows her family is crazy. But when she goes to visit her aunt and uncle for the summer and learns that her uncle’s charred body has been found, her life reaches a new level of insanity. Her erratic aunt’s “psychic” abilities are exaggerated by her grief, and have become borderline violent. Alone in an unfamiliar town, Anna struggles to pick up the pieces and establish any sense of normalcy. She desperately wants to trust Zack, the cute boy next door, but even he might know more about the incident than he is letting on.

But when Anna starts feeling an inexplicable pull to the site of her uncle’s murder, she begins to believe that her family’s supernatural gifts are real after all. Torn between loyalty and suspicion, Anna is certain of only one thing: she must discover who killed her uncle or she could be next....

Jumpstart the World by Catherine Ryan Hyde (thanks to Joli at Actin' Up with books)

I haven't read that much GBLT lit before, but I've always tried to keep an open mind. I'm so happy that I won a copy of this! :D
Elle is a loner. She doesn’t need people. Which is a good thing, because she’s on her own: she had to move into her own apartment so her mother’s boyfriend won’t have to deal with her.

Then she meets Frank, the guy who lives next door. He’s older and has a girlfriend, but Elle can’t stop thinking about him. Frank isn’t like anyone Elle has ever met. He listens to her. He’s gentle. And Elle is falling for him, hard.
But Frank is different in a way that Elle was never prepared for: he’s transgender. And when Elle learns the truth, her world is turned upside down.  Now she’ll have to search inside herself to find not only the true meaning of friendship but her own role in jumpstarting the world.

Tender, honest, and compassionate, Jumpstart the World is a stunning story to make you laugh, cry, and honor the power of love.

If you have the chance, definitely try it out. Even to see what the fuss is all about. It's pretty "trashy lit", especially after seeing what else is out there in YA, but Sara Shepard really knows how to make a mystery be so addictive. Like, there are so many brand names, and the setting is wealthy private school la-di-da-everything-is-perfect-until-girl-goes-missing. Even so, I was pleasantly surprised when I received this one in the mail.
Surely you've heard of the TV show? It's getting to be pretty popular--it's finally made it to Aussie TV, apparently. (I'm terrible with free tv, since I get 'cable') I'm sure you'd be able to find the books in your local library, so you can at least test the waters, see if it's the kind of series you'd like to continue.
Fab books this week. Hope you enjoy all of them! My mailbox is here.
Come and link reviews of books with a Scifi theme on this week's Read My Scifi Review
I can't decide whether or not to start the Pretty Little Liars series...who knows, I'm sure I'll get to it eventually! I've heard fantastic things about it. JUMPSTART THE WORLD is supposed to be great, too! Enjoy!

Here's one thing: it's only 250~ pages, and the pages really do go quickly. I remember reading the first six books (can't believe there are going to be 12 now!) on computer, and only took two days for each, at most! If I were to boil the PLL series books to two things, it'd be: short, quick and addictive.

Yes, can't wait to get to JUMPSTART THE WORLD. It is also pretty thin, and I have a tendency to read my thin books first. :P Which means my thick books continue to go unread. :/
Those are some great looking books this week. Happy Reading!
I'd love to hear more about your university happenings, what are you thinking of studying?

You're going to love The Lonely Hearts Club, it came out of nowhere and hit me in the face with awesomeness <3

Thanks for asking. I've been meaning to do some sort of a personal post that kind of sums up what's been going on lately. Still haven't really talked about my holidays (which was a whole lot of good and bad, but allowed me to appreciate home a lot more), being 'unemployed' up until I become a student, what I'll be doing later on, etc.

To answer your question, I'm thinking of studying to become a nurse. My mum was a nurse in a hospital for about 10 years and is now working in a clinic, so she can help me with my studies (because I didn't study ANY sciences).
There is also primary school teaching. Which I'd be very good at, but I'm just worried that I won't have the patience required to deal with some of the 'problem children', or be organised enough to plan all lessons ahead AND mark homework, etc.
Lastly, there's business and commerce. I've been interested in marketing since year 7, or there's accounting. I did really well with the financial aspects of the senior Business Studies course.

I have until 6th of January (?) to lock in my choices for uni. There are just so many pros & cons for each!!

On top of all that, if I did either primary teaching or business & commerce, I'd love to do a combined degree with either ARTS (major in languages) or INTERNATIONAL STUDIES (with major in languages :P). My top subject for yr 12 was Japanese (with Business 1 mark behind) , so there you go.

Cool. Thanks for letting me know about the awesomeness that is The Lonely Hearts Club. I hate that I'm usually way too tired when I finally get to bed, ready to get some reading done. And then I only get to reading one chapter, so I haven't finished a book in a day in so long. Sorry for the long post.
Thanks for the mention, I'm glad you liked your gift. I ummed and arrred for hours trying to find the right gift. I know that the books are not new releases but I was going more with 'timeless' rather than 'new'.

Have a great year at Uni (how about archaeology ;) ) and will be looking forward to talking with you in the new year!
